City of Ghosts
By: Victoria Schwab
Publisher: Scholastic
In City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab, photography buff Cass and her not-quite-secret best friend Jacob, a ghost who saved her life, are able to travel back and forth across the Veil that separates the living world from the dead. Cass’s parents (her mom: the believer; and her dad: the historian) are authors of a series of books that combines history and lore. They get the opportunity to create a tv show about their books, traveling the world in search of ghosts. They start in Edinburg, the City of Ghosts, and take Cass, their grumpy cat Grimm, and ghost Jacob to spend part of the summer in Scotland.
Cass will have her close-up with the Veil, whether she’s ready or not. Immediately in Edinburg, Cass can feel the Veil calling to her, stronger than anywhere before. She meets Lara Chowdhury, a girl around Cass’s age who may have some insights into Cass’s condition. When they learn of the Raven in Red, a woman’s malevolent spirit, Cass, Jacob, and Lara must work together to stop her before she strikes again. Will they have what it takes to keep the Veil in place?
In this exciting tale of ghostly adventure, Schwab creates a world where there are more than just whispers from beyond the Veil. This is a must read novel for any specter-lover out there.
